Dear Carl Sharif,
I really enjoyed reading your new paper article “Down Town Newark.” It was very interesting and informative. There were many things in this article that I have never known about or have heard. I believe that New York residents moving into Newark is a good idea. I understand that them moving to Newark will bring big businesses and make profit but what about those who already were here an down small businesses and stores in Down Town? If those big businesses come in and take over, how will those small businesses make money if they have been pushed out of the picture? New businesses will provide more revenue for the city but what about those that have been living in the city? This new unmistakable make over in Down Town Newark will create much chaos between those indigenous people of Newark and those new comers of Newark that are used to the Big Apple life style and business.
You stated in your article that, “Change is inevitable.” There is no point in change if about over half of the current residents living in Newark are not supporting the alteration. Sharif, you even mentioned yourself, “How Newark residents will benefit is far less clear.” This obviously means that Newark residents have fewer advantages to this “unmistakable makeover” but the New Yorkers will. It is less important that those New Yorkers who move into Newark benefit form this change because the Newark current residents are the ones that have to go through the pain. Vendors and merchants will have to move to other areas because the new businesses will make all of the money that they once have been making, natives will have to dislocate, and a large gap between both the small already established businesses and new big businesses. Newark citizens will have more advantages if their city that they have lived in and stood by for so many years remain the same. You should really come to my school, North Star Academy Charter School of Newark, to speak to the students adn my peers of this issue. I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Christy Torres
